When my mother heard we were buying the farmhouse, she bought a stitching pattern to make especially for it. She came to visit after we moved in and brought it with her. I dug into my stash for fabrics inspired by the beautiful earthy colors of the finished stitched piece. I often don't plan these kinds of quilts but let my inspiration talk to me.
Once I was happy with the fabrics, I started designing the patchwork as I went along. A dark olive brown followed by a pretty striped taupe were my starting point to create a framed effect.
Then I decided on two quilt blocks...a spool and farmer's daughter. I decided on a band above the stitching with the patchwork blocks and then connected them all with a medium olive green fabric to bring it all together. The design simply grew as I worked on it.
I enjoyed sitting by the fire handquilting it and finished it rather quickly so it has been hanging in my entrance for a number of months. I had not shared it as I always tell my group that a quilt is not finished until the label is attached. My pens had not been unpacked until the last week of January. I found them when hunting for something else and could finally make a label. Each of my quilts is given a name and this one has been called "A Mother's Blessing".
